I feel empty.

A massive volume of tears and rage and marvel has been trying, unsuccessfully, to fill this void for a few hours now. I still feel empty.

Edit: The numbness disappeared after reading through the thread and watching 83.

That was tragic, to say the least.

A lot worse than the fact that he's dead in spite of a whole season still around, and not killed by, oh, I don't know, Oberstein's elaborate plans or something. I wouldn't say he deserved a more grandiose death - the only kind of death Yang "deserves" is a natural one in his old age - but to see him die alone like that was painful.

Uh...what?
For the sake of Reinhard ruling the galaxy sooner.
You know...i'd be realy happy if he was defeated and died heroic death or submited to Reinhard.

... I'll pretend I didn't see the part where you said you'd been wanting Yang to die so badly.

About wanting him to die a heroic death, though: I assume you mean you'd have liked to see him die in a battle against Reinhard. I never imagined Yang would be killed by Reinhard, nor that he would kill Reinhard. Killing the other person is not what they want and that's not how they'd want to stand victorious. Herein lies another of my grievance about Yang's death - they should have met once more, at least! Just one meeting between these two people who highly admire each other is not enough. They're meant to be friends, dammit!

Brilliant episode. I'll miss Yang so much. I can't wait to see Reinhard's reaction, I hope he obliterates those stupid cultists. :/

I'm speechless and numb.
I still can't believe it, it's been more than an hour and all these indescribable feelings are still there.
I knew this was going to happen after all the foreshadowing of the past few episodes but it still hit me hard.
I mean, shot by a nobody? in a corridor? all alone?
Most depressing thing I've seen and so beautifully made.
Now I just want to see everyone's reaction, don't know if I'll be able to handle their sad faces :(

When a show can be so plain and still evoke such emotions from me I have to say the writing and characters are top notch.
Yang's death was amazing.

The tension was heightened throughout the episode.
Taking the sleeping pills. Being over-run by a vastly superior number. Wandering aimlessly. Then he gets shot, I immediately wonder "where was he shot?" - " the leg" - "he might survive and the shooter did just ran away, phew!" - "oh crap... at first it was a pretty clean shot but now that's a lot of blood" - next frame is of him saying the artery was hit.

Then it was only a matter of how they would snuff out his existence. I wondered if Julian could make it in time for some last words. (The possibility of a chryo-tube flew through my mind quickly but I doubted it, I knew he would pass away in time) I wasn't able to read his lines right away but near the end he apologized to everyone, it just reaffirmed how awesome and thoughtful he was, that he never wanted bloodshed. Then black and white.

When anime goes from color to black and white, it's never good.

Fortunately war and hate can not follow him where he has gone.
I admire people such as himself who have so few regrets in life, even if they are fictional.

Hell no...Damn it episode 82 preview ruined it, but it was still sad as fuck. I wonder how Fredrica, Julian and Reinhard will react to this terrible news.

I will now posthumously put Yang on my favourite characters list; loved the guy.

I can't say I'm shocked but it was still stunning with all the details and the fact that they made the death seem so meaningless, so futile. Even if it was necessary for the story, I'd rather have him alive because he was the best character of the series, delivering musings that are rare or non-existent in anime. If there's anything to complain about it's the fact that the death was foreshadowed way too much in the series, not just by the narrator. I first started thinking Yang might die during the first season because of the ending animation. Not at first, but towards the end of the season when he was teaching Julian, marking him as a successor. From a storytelling viewpoint it was bound to happen at some point if you kept asking (like I often do) "Why was this element put here?". His constant reluctance to grab power also hinted at this because there would be no place for him after the war, no permanent peace. For the same reason Reinhard couldn't die yet because it's difficult to imagine the Empire without him. And also I have difficulty imagining a satisfying conclusion that leaves Reinhard alive because he never gives up, so it would only mean the alliance is completely defeated and I don't think this anime is that straightforward, a simple story of conquest.

Still, the foreshadowing was quite good, it's not like some romance anime that has a character tagged for death from episode 1.

I knew he was going to die, there was a lot of foreshadowing, but it was still shocking to see Yang die. I didn't think he would die like that.

I believe the effects of his death will have more of an impact next episode when we see the reactions of other characters, like Julian.

I never cried to any anime/manga or other fictional work. This is the first time i cried to Yang Wenli death. I can't express my feeling how sad i am right now. I had feeling he will die and it was heartbreaking but damn. not like this.. how could he die being shot in the leg. aaaahhh...

I always avoid discussion threads when i marathon already finished series. probably it's first time I'm checking episode discussion thread which is not the final episode.

The way I interpreted things is that those sleep chambers were only used for military crew on alert and people slept normally otherwise.

Well, I watched this episode because I couldn't fall asleep and yeah, this isn't helping. And, um, yeah. Narrator sucks for spoiling it. This episode sucks even worse. How can LoGH be rated highly after this episode my god. Yang was the only reason I watched this series up until now. Really could care less about Julian, Reinhard, and phezzan/earth. What upsets me more is not that he died but that he died with 28 episodes left. Someone tell me there is a reason to continue watching this because I really can't see any.

Ah, this hurts...I really favored Yang over Reinhard, who ever since Kircheis's death became an empty shell. I still have to praise how they did the death scene, it was impossible to defeat him in a fair fight, this was the only way he could have lost to anyone. The quietness was far more solemn than any sad music. What to look forward to now, I know not... 5/5.

Yang Wenli could be killed, but not to be defeated..

Yang is really a cool person until the end, even at the situation where his life is threatened, he was not panicked ( maybe because he was worrying the life of his adjuctants who eventually was in the same situation with him.. )

and lol for the two politicians which was standing in the middle of firefight, and for Yang's killer who was too scared to killed Yang for sure ( yeah, maybe Yang's death would not be this heroic if that killer was killed Yang mercilessly.. )

~28 episodes without The Magician..

Am I the only one who thought the Narrator sounded like he was going to cry too?

I was spoiled from this episode because of 2 (Actually 4) things, I was looking up the OP music of the first season, "Free Planets Alliance Theme", to see if it was composed by a classical composer or the series composer, and as a knee jerk reaction, I look at the comments of the Youtube video, I always do.
Some jerk says "Rip Yang Winli" and I was thinking "I ALWAYS DO THIS!"
I always look up too much into a series I like a lot before I complete it, and spoil it. Same thing happened with Clannad, and now this.

I knew that was going to happen in this episode because one, I read that Beatnik said that episode 82 is the best episode in, not just in Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but he's ever seen.
I knew it had to do with Yang Wenli because of him being on his favorite character list. And another point, the narrator's foreshadowing (And the obvious foreshadow of the 3rd season ED theme, I knew he was going to die the first second I saw Julian in that video).

And yet, it's still amazingly powerful. It shows you that it's not about being spoiled before the moment of fiction, it's the direction, and the music, and the lighting, and the acting, and the writing, everything, it's everything.
Everything in a production is important. I thought the same thing with Clannad, and now this.

I love how you don't even know the guys face who shot Yang. No-face, no-name. It's like he died all alone with no one he loves.
And he knows it through his apologies.
Also, the style - only found in the old days - of the beautiful, poignant Black and White image. The only series I've seen that in that is newer is Gurren Lagann (2007), every other time was in an older series.

I personally think that Reinhard will be the most devastated.
He will now have this empty hole that he cannot fill in his heart, he cannot defeat Yang, he cannot settle with Yang, the opportunity is gone forever.

This will be Reinhard's downfall. Yes, simple things can have a huge impact on people, enough to destroy everyone around them.

What an amazing series, just when you think Yoshiki Tanaka and Noboru Ishiguro couldn't make this series any better.
The perfect pair for an anime.
I thought the same with Clannad, and now this.

I wonder if people would agree with me? I'm not comparing both of the series. But they are similar. They're both long, character driven, and can be considered boring to people who are not interested (Though, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is much more intelligent and it's a space opera).
Despite my love for both series, Legend of the Galactic heroes is more accessible than Clannad in my opinion, and I would recommend both, but Legend of the Galactic heroes will come first, if they are not afraid of the episode count (That's full of character building baby!).

Just, really, really well done creations. Why can't we get more of this one TV?
I thought the same with Clannad, and now this.
And now... This.

Beauty.

I think I may have gone a bit overboard on your quote, but it influenced me anyway.
My post here was arbitrary, so I didn't have the time to re-read (Or remember) where the comment was.
It was not your fault at all, it was just what episode I knew it was going to happen on.
At the time I read your review, before I saw that infelicitous comment on YouTube, I imagined episode 82 being something completely different than what it was. (I actually cannot find where you mentioned episode 82 in that manner, but I did see it somewhere... I think.)

You did not spoil Beatnik, you don't have to rebuke yourself.

Actually, it can help people look forward to the greatness that this long series holds when you watch the whole thing, that there is no filler, or wasted time.
My favorite episodes are the history lessons, I think episode 40 was the History of Earth, and there are a few more.
If I had to teach classes on politics, I would make my class watch this series for inspiration. If that's not really a good idea, than a drama class.

By the way, I'm sure this is an inappropriate place to ask this, but may I add you to my friends list?
I've always enjoyed reading your posts, and I like your opinions.
It would make it easier to see where I can read them (And if that's a littler too egregious of a reason, we can be friends too. :D)

It's nice to see that you're back on here again! Last time I saw your profile, you were off for around a year.

Because he was exhausted and tired; unable to sleep. Trying to stay alert pretty much the psychological effect afterwards with ripple effects of the other episodes. If death doesn't get to you first, I'm sure sleep being the second option after dying.
