I'm only a fan of yourself, however I always interpreted the scene where Margaret died in milk as more symbolic of her cause of death. Back then "consumption" (if I remember that's what they said was her cause of death) could have been passed through unhygienic living and contaminated milk! Anyway that's the link I made. Although again I'm no media expert.

What has always frustrated me is that they kept the dozens of different Thomas's, but just couldn't live with a couple of Marys.

He would not dare. They believed royalty was favored by God. Imo that is wht Henry turned on Anne after catherine died. He raised his hand to a royal.

(because i know i dont, i see her as raised by the king,) he saw catherine as a royal for obvious reasons, but are we speculating that he really pushed for annes ultimate downfall because she actually, by blood birth, was not a royal? i have wondered this myself, because he only executed the 2 queens of low-birth as compared to the queens of royal birth like catherine of aragon or anne of cleves- you cant touch a lady who has a whole royal house behind her in her native country. but anne boelyn? toast. she had no international family to defend her. i think thats perhaps why henry was able to do away
-specifically- with her the way he did, yet he "allowed" for his other divorced royal-blood queens to merely "retire" to some other property.
What about looking at Charles Brandon’s life The one person who seemed to be able to keep his friendship with the turbulent Henry all his life
So often we see friends falling out when power dynamics change, in history, but it seems that Henry and Charles really were as thick as thieves, boyhood friends who really were friends.

Whenever I think of the Tudors, I think of the wise words of my Tudor England professor: "This show took reality, and it took of its clothes off, and then twisted and contorted it ways that look very impressive on screen but never happen in real life".
Yes, he opened class by calling the reason most people were there the porn version of history. And that's why he's one of my favorite professors to this day.

I found the Tudors good fun to watch. But it did really bother me that the Gabriele Anwar character was Margaret. Unnecessary. Otherwise it helped turn people onto the Tudors craze, and as the daughter of a history professor, I knew the history, but the show helped me learn some new things and I went on to research it even more. Like it or not, many people are here bc they were turned onto the Anne Boleyn story from either the show, Phillipa Gregory's books, or some other modern discussion about the topic. Even this channel likely exists bc of those things and their popularity!
Atleast the Tudors was better than that awful show Reign!
I jumped intro tudor history by the white queen drama show all these years ago ( season 1 one via BBC more)
I appreciate what they did right SO much. But how unbelievably frustrating that we could've had both Margaret and Mary Tudor, two incredibly interesting and intriguing plotlines... but instead we got some bastardization of both combined? And then throwing Portugal in the mix because you don't want to figure out France or Scotland within this weird his-sisters-aren't-married-yet by the time he's into Anne Boleyn timeline? It's one of my biggest frustrations with the show runners. And it's still one of my all-time favorites. It's just. Ugh. Also my boo Henry Cavill playing one of the least appealing people from the court of Henry VIII lol.
I started watching The Tudors during the pandemic lockdown last year. I knew almost nothing of Tudor history but immediately knew the bit about Margaret and the King of Portugal had to be embellished. So I did what anyone would do.... consulted Dr. Google. Then I became more confused, but at least more wary of The Tudors. I started googling many of the story lines and characters, then finding youtube vids on the topics. That’s how I found you Dr. Kat. And what a great find! Thank you!

I love the Tudors but that's because I'm well versed in the history and enjoy watching the wildly-inaccurate mess in front of me.
And they tried way more than Reign ever did.
I was fortunate enough to live in the area of Bury St Edmunds for a time and accidentally discovered she was buried there while I just wandering taking in the history. Wasn't expecting to see a royal grave on a random Wednesday, but I was absolutely delighted.
the tudor’s was THE show that got me into history. i still like the drama of it but i wish they could’ve been more true to history
Fun story: when Anne Boleyn was new on that show I was talking to a lady that I just met. she had only watched the show I have only read the history. When I said anne lost her head she told me off for the spoilers. My jaw hit the ground. I have NO GAUGE on the etiquette of spoilers for dramas based on historical events. I mean, there were people that disagreed with James Camerons choice to sink the Titanic. W. T. F. 🤦♀️
Seek out & watch “The Six Wives of Henry VIII”, “Anne of a Thousand Days”, “Elizabeth R”, all made in the 1970’s.

@@Mistydazzle I remember watching the 6 Wives - really beautifully done, and I was completely hooked on the Tudors as a 12-year-old. I think the costumes were displayed at Hampton Court, maybe --- I remember seeing them somewhere and being dazzled. That series was a trailblazer because of its accuracy, which was unusual at the time for "period dramas" (look at Austen adaptations from the 70s!)
I have been to the church to see her tomb, its very modest and then to Moyses Museum which has two locks of her red hair

I have tried to watch "The Tudors" twice. I can't make it past the 3rd episode. Ha, ha. Seriously, the Tudors made so much drama on their own, they didn't need the writers to screw it up!
I had the same experience. I'm a history buff and I want to see history portrayed accurately.
I love all kind of period dramas and could never finish that one. Not really because of the accuracy but I just hated Henry for the most part.
I always imagine it plays in a parallel universe it really helps so you can judge it separately from the accuracy but even though I can do it I only watch it at midnight when I'm bored and just for the drama haha

I was so glad I didn’t show my mother this show, instead I showed her the classic 1966 “A man for all seasons” with Paul scofield and Robert Shaw. But that movie only focuses on sir Thomas more. Sure the movie wasn’t 100 percent accurate, hey I find it way better than the tudors. I got her hooked to Tudor history, so we can get Tudor books from the library for her and I to read.
Could you do comparison videos on the Starz series of The White Queen, The White Princess, and The Spanish Princess with how historically accurate/inaccurate they are?
Trust me, very inaccurate! But - a star of accuracy compared to Reign! I advised the Laughing a cavalier to refrain from watching it unless it do his blood pressure in! 🤣🤣. RIP Prince Philip. A staunch supporter of Her Majesty and a man of honour and integrity. A trait which is sadly lacking in this younger generation 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

I loved the White Queen and The White Princess, even with the inaccuracies, as I love historical drama/fiction. I thought I would love it, but I was not a fan of The Spanish Princess.
I studied film and in my opinion, the symbolism of the red on white could be a very over dramatic attempt to call to mind the colours of the tudor rose, on the other hand it could be a melodramatic plot contrivance.

I thought it just made the red stand out more and thus the death that much more dramatic. Though maybe a mix of both since "Mary/Margaret" were Tudor.
I'm sure they didn't mean it like that but drinking milk from infected cow was how many people caught one type of tuberculosis.
The Tudors has a super special place in my heart! Came out at just the right time with several of my all time fave actors I grew up with (Jonny Rhys Meyers, Jeremy Northam, Sam Neill?! ALL ⭐️⭐️⭐️!!
It gets a far worse rap than it deserves. This show did not set out to create a documentary, it’s showtime people. However the shows creator Michael Hirst is someone who understands that one has to know the rules in order to break them - he understood the assignment. It really captures the essence / spirit of these characters I had spent my entire youth reading about - bringing them alive and into a way my brain could really relate to as a 20 year old in the modern world…looking at one Holbein portrait over and over to envision their features … and this show happened to bring them to life brilliantly. The drama was hilarious, and just that - drama to serve the narrative and intertwined fiction to appease a wide range of people (Tallis and Compton gay lovers?! I dig!)… that is how historical drama works… fiction is the best gateway drug to actual history no one can attest to this better than me, I became a 16C historian because of this show! So no one can truly say it doesn’t have some sort of heart to it… I’m not alone in this sentiment either! I’ve met others around my age who have had similar
Experiences- that’s fun and totally worth celebrating! The rest is just fun to serve the greater story for the 21st century screen, it’s like, lighten up ya know?
Anything that turns people onto history is worth celebrating… it’s also of no comparison whatsoever to the soap opera, lowly produced style of Reign or those Starz “White” Gregory based series! The Tudors was well researched and used their massive budget wisely the core of their performances and stories fleshed out.
I’m also always baffled at the popular objection over “all the sex”?! To be fair, it was primarily the marketing (genius), in the pilot & usually the series ironically objectified the male actors rather than the women which was unusual for the mid 00s.
The Tudors was in on the joke, and that is something the series and it’s creators hardly get credit for.
Mary (Rose)* Tudor was such an interesting person and she's often overlooked! I'm happy she's finally getting to be on the spotlight!
*I got used to call her "Mary Rose" (as we see sometimes in literature) so when I talk about her, she's not mistaken with her niece 😬 *

Your phrase of “you’re welcome “, is one greeting I have not heard anywhere else. I find it a very warm greeting and I find it very touching. Your videos are not only entertaining but very informative and interesting. I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and the way you present it. I am near 60 and have been interested in the Tudors and other royal families since I was in middle school. Thankfully, I have many videos, books and other information about the Tudor history that I have enjoyed immensely. I enjoy how you present your material very much and I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge and understanding of this most interesting subject!
I loved hearing Mary and Brandon's explanations to Henry on their marriage, especially Brandon's. Lol, she was crying, Henry, what was I supposed to do??? Yes! I also love how they erased Mary, Queen of Scots entirely 😒 That was one of my major issues with the show, they erased one of the most important historical figures of the time period by combining Henry's sisters, in addition to the numerous other changes made for the sake of "drama"
@@Raven_Nivhaar the thing is, they didn’t erase Mary Queen of Scots, she is literally named by Henry in the last season of the show, mentioning how James died and his child is a girl

Well done. I watched the Tudors as entertainment but realized that screen writers use “dramatic license.” That is often misguided since History, i.e. truth, is more intriguing than melodrama. Love your work !

I would love to hear your thoughts on Margaret Tudor as well. I’ve been reading the novel Three Sisters Three Queens by Philipa Gregory and she’s the central character in the story and I know it’s historical fiction so liberties were taken but I found her a really compelling figure to look at. I guess I just wonder what’s really there for her rather than an author’s imagining. Love your videos so much thank you for this look into Mary!!

I remember reading the Hilda Lewis novel about her in the early 80s...(how scary - 40 years ago!!) the novel made her look an interesting character...

Was actually a Showtime show. And I read somewhere a long time ago that they actually combined the sisters, Margaret and Mary, into one character.

In the Spanish princess, the story is a little different . Mary refuses to marry the king of France and Catherine of Aragon helps Henry and her arrive to the agreement that she will be able to choose her next husband.
But I do question the portrayal of Margaret Tudor in that TV series.
I absolutely prefer her portrayal in TSP than in the Tudors. Very much more accurate considering the many changes in the Tudors

@@scz1770 TSP still has a lot of errors, but their portrayal of Mary is better *compared to that in The Tudors*. Of course, the books are better for learning history

Thank you, Dr Kat for another fantastic video. While enjoying the delicious 'soapy-ness' of the Tudors, I did realize that Margaret was an amalgamation of Henry's sisters Mary and Margaret Tudor. However, this video does a wonderful job of clearing up a very muddy mess created by The Tudor's dramatic license. It is interesting that without these two women, Mary Stewart (Mary Queen of Scots) and Lady Jane Grey would not exist.
The excerpt from the film is so execrably costumed that it throws the reliability of the whole script into doubt. Did they run out of fabric making those hideous ruffs so that there was none left over for proper (and accurate) sleeves?! The Tudors were interesting enough without confusing the story. Love your channel and delighted to learn more about Mary. Thank you for making history more accessible.
I have to admit, when I was watching the Tudors and the well aged, deeply tanned “Margaret” proclaimed “I’M the queen of Portugal!” It was just too much, I damn near spit my drink out.
I can't be completely mad at The Tudors because it was one of the things that really ignited my interest in history, particularly Tudor history. Though I was irritated by the drastic changes that were made, it became something of a game to try and spot where they had switched things, or completely invented them altogether. I don't have much experience with historical fiction, but this definitely stretched the "fiction" aspect of that. I would never recommend it to people, especially those who have a serious interest in history just because the changes DID become annoying once I had researched things and realized just how far from reality we had traveled. But again, it's because they had changed things so dramatically that I felt compelled to look things up for myself to find out what really happened to these people. Double edged sword lol

I have always been amazed that Charles Brandon for the most part stayed in Henry’s favor. As for Mary, she knew what she wanted & she did get it. She married Brandon. So you have to give her that!

Really enjoyed this video. I have not watched the series on the Tudors if I come across it I will watch for enjoyment rather than historical accuracy. I often like to research historical facts after watching events of history being portrayed in a series or movie. Thank you once again for a very informative video.
Yes researching historical fact after viewing or reading historical fiction is the best approach and the facts can be just as if not more interesting than the fiction. Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn on The Tudors was magnificent.

This is not actually related to this video. But, I had an idea and I don't know anyone in history/science in real life. Genesis: I do decorative stitching. Sometimes my finger is pricked and there is a little tiny bit of blood. It is very difficult to clean this off of the object, so, I stitch over the stain. This led me to wonder if there might be tiny little DNA samples all over the stitched objects - like the Bayeux Tapestry? Could these be used to know more about the people who made all the things????

Thank you Dr. Kat for another informative and engaging video. Mary seems to have had few choices in her life. As the king’s sister, she was a pawn in his diplomatic endeavours. She did eventually marry the man of her choice and expressed her displeasure at the marriage of Henry to Anne Boleyn. Perhaps she was courageous. Perhaps she was foolish.
Perhaps a bit of both. I have always liked Princess Mary Rose Tudor. She MAY BE my x13 GGM.
I have only seen clips of "The Tudors" and am glad I never saw the whole thing. IMO the most redeeming aspect of the show is a devilishly handsome young Henry VIII.
That said, I would so much rather listen to a talk by you, Dr. Kat, or by Claire Ridgway. I hope it is not wrong to name another channel here but I deeply respect both of you. Real history is so much better than sensationalized fictional stories that leave the reader or watcher wondering why certain things happened. You can delve into real history and learn from the best.

Edward IV is a Plantagenet king, not a Tudor one.

That poor family didn't have much luck Edward v was king for a short period and his brother were said to have been locked in the tower of London and later killed (there is huge speculation about who it was that actually killed them, their uncle now King Richard the 3rd is the most believed but there are also those who believed that it was Margaret Beaufort), there was also a yorkist uprising against Henry 7th which was believed to have been led by Richard as he survived the tower it it not known wether it was actually Richard or a pretender though Elizabeth was betrothed three times (once to a Neville, her paternal grandmother's family, once to the Dauphin of France and then to Henry 7th after the battle of bosworth, becoming the mother of the Tudor dynasty and who's descendants can still be traced to the English Throne to this day, Cecily was married off a few times so was Catherine and Arthur (he was Edward 4th illegitimate son) was a prominent figure in Henry 8ths Court
@@chelseaoliver5404 Yes the mystery of the Princes in the Tower is well known. We'll probably never know what truly happened. Margaret Beaufort wasn't the culprit though, she is only falsely portrayed as so in Philippa Gregory's Fiction book.

I just found your channel. Thank you for highlighting the sisters of Henry VIII. Mary and Margaret had to be strong women to survive as they did.
Fascinating for what you’ve told us about women’s social history across class lines. It appears she had to think about her relationships to men, and marriage, as a means of survival as much as her sisters further down the social hierarchy.
❤ idk, historical dramas are always historical fantasies that do get people at least interested in the history. So as I write I just can't work up the oomph to get mad about it anymore.

I originally got into Tudor history by English author Phillipa Gregory's debut Tudor novel The Other Boleyn Girl and completely falling in love with Anne Boleyn's complicated relationship dynamic with her older sister Mary (who I'm also mad history overlooks). Finishing that book I devoured all four seasons of Showtimes the Tudors: The Six Wives of Henry VIII in a weekend and was ENRAGED when I realized they passed over Mary by combing the two sisters personalities. Mary Tudor has so much to offer history and I'm angry she keeps getting sidelined as nothing more than a ditsy fool who fell in love with the wrong man.

Clearly, The Tudors isn't all that concerned with historical accuracy. Otherwise they would have cast a tall blond man as Henry VIII. Handsome as Jonathan Rhys Myers is, he's short and dark.
Dark, yes. However, Jonathan Rhys Meyers is only about 4 inches shorter than King Henry VIII
@@daniellekurtz9271 Yes, but people were at least a little shorter then. To have the same impact Henry VIII would have had to his contemporaries, an actor playing him should be at least 6'4".

Watching the Tudors series was painful, they messed with the history so much. I learned my English history from 50 years of reading history books, so I wasn’t confused, just disgusted.
Me too; I dont know which I found more distasteful: the fanciful lies told or the semi-pornographic way of the telling.

The semi pornographic telling was really bothersome. I kept skipping scenes. And then messing with the story just made it annoying.

Although I enjoyed The Tudors as "soap opera" enjoyable television. I frequently yelled at the screen for historical facts being altered. Just as an aside, I was born in Bromley, KY and raised in Ludlow, KY. I like to think the connection significant.

I had expected the usual type of discussion video from Dr Kat on Mary's life, so the inclusion of a look at her portrayal in The Tudors was a pleasant surprise.
I love Mary as a historical figure, quite an interesting lady but she gets overlooked a lot compared to Henry and his wives.
I find David Loades summing up of Mary as a bit abrupt and dismissive of a life once lived. At the same time, althoughI hate to admit it, Loades is quite accurate in his brief description as Mary was just famous due to her family connection's rather than the events and her actions during her lifetime. Still, she is a fascinating person nonetheless who defied Henry VIII and married a man of her own choosing and for love. She may not be remembered for doing anything extraordinary but that isn't her entirely her fault. She was a royal woman living in a man's world. She may have been a beloved member of her family but she had to obey her father and brother who used her as goods for sale in order to increase England's political standing in the world.
What is it about Dr. Kat's voice that even when she's doing her sponser ad's script, it's 1000% less annoying than any other creator?
I may be different from others, but I find the truth of everything in actual history more intriguing than the show of "The Tudors"

I think it's fascinating that Henry's will specifies the lineage of Mary rather than Margaret. You'd think after his long quest for a male heir, and his misgivings about a woman's ability to hold the throne, he would have specified closest MALE of either lineage. It really does cast doubt on that document in my mind.

I hate The Tudors for how it messed with history. The story of those times had enough drama without inventing it. But also, I hate how they created sympathy for Henry rather than telling the truth. They messed with the difference in ages between him and his wives, by making Katherine of Aragon older than she was and Henry younger, which made her look a bit like a cougar, when it was Henry who was marrying someone much younger when he married Anne Boleyn and especially Katherine Howard. That was so unfair.

I have a question for anyone who may know. When royalty back in the Tudor times had stillbirths, miscarriages etc, were they genuinely devastated or were they merely upset at the Loss of an heir? Only reason I ask is that I was told (in history at school years ago) that many poor people who lived in slums were often relieved when a child died because it was one less mouth to feed (tho I’m sure that wasn’t always the case). I guess what I’m wondering is given that kids were often badly treated in the past, did people have a different way of viewing the death of a child to us nowadays?
